The Wirex Card at casinos: ruled out by its own terms

A Wirex card looks purpose-built for casino play — a crypto balance behind an ordinary debit card — but Wirex’s own cardholder terms bar online gambling with the card (checked 12 July 2026). That ban, not the casino cashier, is what decides the question. The EEA card runs on Mastercard and is issued by Transact Payments Malta Limited, a Malta-registered issuer — a nice irony, and still a no. What Wirex is, in one paragraph

Wirex is a crypto account with a spending card attached: you hold BTC, USDT and other assets in the app, and the card settles purchases from that balance. In the EEA the card is a Mastercard, issued under a programme run by Transact Payments Malta Limited (per Wirex’s published card documentation, accessed 12 July 2026). At a casino cashier it would present as a plain Mastercard deposit — which matters, because that is exactly the transaction Wirex’s terms exclude.

Why the card route is out

Two separate signals in Wirex’s own published documents, both checked 12 July 2026:

1. The cardholder terms bar online-gambling use of the card. This is a contractual exclusion, not a technical block — an authorisation might even go through at some cashiers, and you would still be in breach, with the account-review risk that carries.
2. The rewards programme excludes gambling transactions from cashback — a second place the same policy shows up in writing.

We have not seen Wirex listed as a named payment method at any cashier we’ve captured on a real Malta-resident account. Using the card at a casino would mean a generic Mastercard deposit — permitted by the casino (card rails are verified at every operator we list) but ruled out by the card. Contrast Wise: its policy carves the card lane out, and a Wise-card deposit went through at two of our operators — Wirex’s terms leave no such lane.
